Install Ipopt on Mac OS 10.6 for Matlab Posted on October 14, 2011 by Truong Nghiem Ipopt is a very good software package and library for large-scale nonlinear optimization (NLP solver). Step 1: In order to install Homebrew on your Mac you need to have Xcode installed. If you have full Xcode already, then proceed to the next step. If you don’t and you also don’t want to install full Xcode on your Mac, then you can also download command-line tools for Xcode instead by running the following command in Terminal.
First, verify that you have installed the following components on your system:
(Xquartz is not strictly necessary but more confortable).
Then, if you download the current git version
$ brew install m4
$ brew install automake
$ brew install libtool
$ brew tap dpo/openblas
$ brew tap-pin dpo/openblas
$ brew options ipopt
$ brew options mumps
$ brew install mumps –without-mpi
For the parallel one, just forget –without-mpi and install also mpi and metis.
For Qhull
For Python
$ pip install numpy
$ pip install scipy
$ pip install matplotlib
Download sources¶
There are two ways to get GetFEM++, either as a compressed package for the stablerelease (file getfem-5.3.tar.gz downloadable on the page download and install) or via anonymous git access (current unstable version under development).
You can get the last stable version directly with
download package:

unpack:
and go to the root directory of GetFEM++:

Configure Options¶
If you want to use a different compiler than the one chosenautomatically by the
./configure
script, just specify itsname on the command line:If you want to build one of the interfaces, use:
depending on the interface you want to build. Note that the python interfaceis build by default and for python 3 version.
If you want to use a specific BLAS library, you may have tosupply the necessary link flags and libs to the configure scriptwith:

option (the default prefix directory is/usr/local

Note that there are other options to the configure script. A./configure--help
will list them.
Matlab interface¶
The compilation of the matlab interface (with the --enable-matlab
option of the configure
script) may fail due to a bad configuration of the Matlab compiler mex.
First, you need matlab
and mex
commands accessible from your shell prompt. If not, add Applications/MATLAB_RXXXX.app/bin
on your path (for instance with exportPATH=$PATH:Applications/MATLAB_RXXXX.app/bin
if your shell is bash
and for XXXX
your Matlab installed version. Alternatively, you can make symbolic links to matlab
and mex
executable in /usr/local/bin
thanks to the command sudoln-sApplications/MATLAB_RXXXX.app/bin/matlabmatlab
and sudoln-sApplications/MATLAB_RXXXX.app/bin/mexmex
.
Then, you will probably have to run
To produce the correct mexopts.sh
file in the .matlab/
directory of your home directory. If it still does not work, then you can try to modify the .matlab/mexopts.sh
or replace it. Some mexopts.sh
specially adapted to macOS X/Xcode are available on the internet (See for instance here for MATLAB_R2015).
Caution
- you should have built the GetFEM++ static library (i.e. do not use
./configure--disable-static
when building GetFEM++). - you should have use the –enable-matlab option to configure the GetFEM++ sources (i.e. ./configure –enable-matlab …)
You may also use --with-matlab-toolbox-dir=toolbox_dir
to change the default toolbox installation directory (gfdest_dir/getfem_toolbox
). Use ./configure--help
for more options.
With this, since the Matlab interface is contained into the GetFEM++ sources (in the directory interface/src) you can compile both the GetFEM++ library and the Matlab interface by

in order to check the matlab interface (thissets some environment variables and runs the check_all.m
script which is the tests/matlab
directory of the distribution) and install it (the librarieswill be copied in gfdest_dir/lib
, while the MEX-File and M-Files will becopied in toolbox_dir

When the library is installed, you may have to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
environment variable to the directory containing the libgetfem.so

The last step is to add the path to the toolbox in the matlab path:
- you can set the environment variable
MATLABPATH
totoolbox_dir
(exportMATLABPATH=toolbox_dir
for example). - you can put
addpath('toolbox_dir')
to your$HOME/matlab/startup.m
You can then try to execute one of the demo program in getfem_root_directory/interface/tests/matlab

Scilab interface¶
The installation of the SciLabGetFEM++ toolbox can be somewhat tricky, since it combines a C++ compiler, libraries and SciLab interaction. In case of troubles with anon-GNU compiler, gcc/g++ (>= 4.8) should be a safe solution.
Caution
- The minimal SciLab release is the 5.2.2.
- you should have built the GetFEM++ static library (i.e. do not use
./configure--disable-static
when building GetFEM++). - you should have use the
--enable-scilab
option to configure the GetFEM++ sources (i.e../configure--enable-scilab
…)

cyipopt is a Python wrapper around Ipopt. It enables using Ipopt from thecomfort of the Python programming language.
Usage
For simple cases where you do not need the full power of sparse and structuredJacobians etc, cyipopt provides the function minimize_ipopt which hasthe same behaviour as scipy.optimize.minimize, for example:
Installation
The Anaconda Python Distribution isone of the easiest ways to install Python and associated packages for Linux,Mac, and Windows. Once Anaconda (or miniconda) is installed, you can installcyipopt on Linux and Mac from the Conda Forge channel with:
The above command will install binary versions of all the necessarydependencies and cyipopt. Note that there currently are no Windows binaries.You will have to install from source from Windows or if you want a customizedinstallation, e.g. with MKL, HSL, etc.
To begin installing from source you will need to install the followingdependencies:
- C/C++ compiler
- pkg-config [only for Linux and Mac]
- Ipopt
- Python 2.7 or 3.4+
- setuptools
- cython
- numpy
- six
- future
- scipy [optiional]
The binaries and header files of the Ipopt package can be obtained fromhttp://www.coin-or.org/download/binary/Ipopt/. These include a version compiledagainst the MKL library. Or you can build Ipopt from source. The remainingdependencies can be installed with conda or other package managers.
Download the source files of cyipopt and update setup.py to point to theheader files and binaries of the Ipopt package, if LD_LIBRARY_PATH andpkg_config are not setup to find ipopt on their own.
Then, execute:
Docker container
The subdirectory docker contains a docker container with preinstalled ipoptand cyipopt. To build the container, cd into the docker directory and runmake. Then you can start the container by:
and either call ipopt directly or start a ipython shell and import ipopt.
Vagrant environment
The subdirectory vagrant contains a Vagrantfile that installs ipopt andcyipopt in OS provision. To build the environment, cd into the vagrantdirectory and run vagrant up (Requires that you have Vagrant+VirtualBoxinstalled). Then you can access the system by:
and either call ipopt directly or start a python shell and importipopt. Also, if you get source files<http://www.coin-or.org/download/binary/Ipopt/> of coinhsl and put it in thevagrant directory, the vagrant provision will detect and add them in theipopt compiling process, and then you will have ma57, ma27, and other solversavailable on ipopt binary (ma97 and mc68 were removed to avoid compilationerrors).
