I use the GiO. The advantages are: - excellent guitar I/O quality, an Apogee signature - integrated audio/midi unit - solid construction - supports MIDI input and output to control off/on lights - supports one expression pedal Issues - MIDI drivers on Mac OS X are a bit unreliable. Best approach is to keep Audio/Midi Setup running all the time. Disconnect the GiO after each use, and refresh MIDI devices before putting the computer to sleep. Wake the computer up, then plugin in the GiO, wait for it to appear in the MIDI devices page, then press refresh a couple of times. This seems to reliably get it connected properly - The USB cable unplugs pretty easily if you just step on the cable. Its not a solid, lockin connection that you'd expect on a gig-worthy equipment - Only supports one expression pedal, and its a separate device. That's not really too bad, but some devices have to built in pedals like the FCB1010 - but it does't have any audio I/O. |

I have used the GiO and a MacBook Pro live with good results. You have to be careful about routing cables so no one steps on them near the GiO - that's what cause the USB cable to easily get unplugged. You might consider some kind of velcro fastener to harden the connection. The computer itself is a bit delicate and its connections need to be secured too. And tripping on a USB cable connected to a computer can easily pull the computer off its stand. Using an Apple Mini with a Bluetooth keyboard and USB monitor might be a more secure option. If you want variable line levels, use the Mic or Instrument settings, whose huge gain ranges cover line level inputs as well.
